Calcium with Vitamin D Reduces Cancer Risk in Women

by ruth on June 12th, 2007

Looks like calcium and vitamin D not only keeps your bones healthy (and thus prevent osteoporosis) and prevent cardiovascular risks, a recent study also shows that increasing the intake of calcium and vitamin D could also reduce the risk for cancer in women by at least 60 percent.

The four-year clinical trial included more than one thousand women over the age of 55 in one of three supplement groups: 1) calcium (1400-1500mg) plus vitamin D (1100 IU vitamin D) 2) calcium only (1400-1500 mg) or 3) a placebo. The researchers found that the risk of developing cancer was 60 percent lower for those who took calcium and vitamin D and 47 percent lower for those taking calcium alone, compared to the placebo.

Should you want further reading, the results of the study has been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. For an overview, see this news report at EurekAlert.

60% is a considerable amount. Some benefits are really negligible and are mostly useful with their main benefits only.

That’s good news. With the high chance to reduce the risk of cancer in women, it’s very much helpful. We all know that prevention is always better than cure.
