Curry Fights Alzheimer’s Disease

by ruth on March 21st, 2008

In the recent All About Alzheimer’s Blog Carnival was an entry about a study indicating that curry can help fight Alzheimer’s Disease. From the blog entry:

New research reveals that eating curry could help in the fight against Alzheimers disease. Scientists have discovered that a chemical called Curcumin, found in curry and turmeric can help the body fight the disease. Curcumin helps the immune system to clear the brain of a waste product which is crucial in the development of Alzheimers.

Too bad there was no citation where the study was published, or if the conclusions were based on preliminary lab-scale studies or actual clinical trials.

Curcumin, from the curry spice turmeric, has been shown to possess potent
antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties and to reduce beta-amyloid and plaque
burden in experimental studies, but epidemiologic evidence is lacking. The
authors investigated the association between usual curry consumption level and
cognitive function in elderly Asians. In a population-based cohort (n = 1,010) of
nondemented elderly Asian subjects aged 60-93 years in 2003, the authors compared
Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores for three categories of regular curry
consumption, taking into account known sociodemographic, health, and behavioral
correlates of MMSE performance. Those who consumed curry “occasionally” and
“often or very often” had significantly better MMSE scores than did subjects who
“never or rarely” consumed curry. The authors reported tentative evidence of
better cognitive performance from curry consumption in nondemented elderly
Asians, which should be confirmed in future studies.

Now a days curcumin have been used widely in the whole world to ward off Cancer,Alzeimers and many other complex diseases also but I have no fair idea about it.I mean what Curcumin really is? is it a herb or it derived from cooking curry itself or what?
