Diet and Lifestyle Influence Response to Drugs

by ruth on January 21st, 2008

Sometimes, it’s not really what you eat that makes you invincible to disease (as if it were that simple!). However, if you lead a healthy lifestyle and take a close look at what you eat, research shows that a healthy diet and lifestyle makes you more receptive to conventional treatment, such as in cancer therapies.

Writing in Nature Genetics, University of Manchester researchers have shown how the nutrients in the environment are critical to the fitness of cells that carry genetic mutations caused by diseases.

The findings for the first time provide a scientific insight into why some people might respond better to certain medications than others and form the foundations for more individualised drug therapy in the future.

To me, it also emphasizes that the impact of conventional medicine (using drugs for treatment) and the so-called “alternative” medicine (such as the use of functional foods) need not be mutually exclusive. If you are undergoing conventional treatment, it is important to continue to lead a healthy lifestyle, particularly a healthy diet.
