Does Enviga Really Help Lose Weight?
Enviga is a green tea drink co-developed by Coca Cola and Nestle, which is touted to “help burn calories” and “increase metabolism”. These benefits are supposed to be derived from its green tea extract (called epigallocatechin gallate, EGCG) content.
While it is true that there have been studies suggesting that EGCG may influence metabolism and energy expenditure, most studies have been small and short-term to be conclusive. Of course that doesn’t prevent Enviga from using these studies to back up their claim.
Michael Jacobson, from the consumer advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest, said,
“The effect of these ingredients on weight is trivial. . . . We have told Coca-Cola that if they don’t stop making these claims we will sue them.”
On the other hand, Ray Crockett, a spokesman for Coca-Cola, said
“We have worked very hard to get across the point that we are not presenting Enviga as a weight-loss product. We’ve said quite the opposite. It is not a magic bullet. It is a small step that a person can take in conjunction with a sensible diet and regular exercise to help maintain a healthy lifestyle.”
So there you have it folks, right from the manufacturer’s mouth. There’s just no fast, safe and easy way to losing weight. Exercise and healthy diet does it. Enviga might have been better off emphasizing the medicinal benefits of the antioxidants contained in the drink that its weight loss powers.
