FDA Ammends Health Claim for Calcium and Osteoporosis
Soon you will most likely see labels of milk and other calcium-rich food products bearing the health claim that its consumption may help reduce the risks for contracting osteoporosis. This health claim is approved by the FDA, in an effort to encourage the public to recognize the benefits of calcium and vitamin D in bone health.
“This new labeling should assist consumers to select foods - and women especially since women do the majority of food shopping in the US - that provide adequate calcium and Vitamin D intake and hopefully prevent the occurrence of osteoporosis in themselves and their family members.”
Specifically, FDA is proposing to change the calcium and osteoporosis health claim to add a claim for calcium and vitamin D together and a reduced risk of osteoporosis.
For further reading, the National Dairy Council has an extensive collection of scientific literature on the impact of dairy consumption on bone health.

It is definitely about time that they loosened up a bit on this health claim. Now hopefully they spread awareness that calcium alone is not the answer to preventing osteoporosis. A full balance of minerals, calcium, magnesium, vitamin d, vitamin k etc.. is needed to maintain and improve bone health.
