Folic Acid and Genistein Cut Disease Risk Due to Bisphenol Exposure

by ruth on September 11th, 2007

In a mice study, it has been shown that a mother’s exposure to bisphenol A, a chemical commonly used in plastic and other packaging materials, can cause detrimental effects to the health of the baby mice, increasing their risk for diabetes, obesity and cancer.

However, maternal supplementation with a mixture of folic acid and vitamin B12 or genistein had a positive result on offsetting the effects of bisphenol A in mice. Just another proof that the maternal diet really has long lasting impact on her offspring’s health and later predisposition to disease (fetal programming). Folic acid is also an important constituent in prenatal vitamins, known to help prevent spinal defects and cleft lip formation in the fetus.

It doesn’t mean that folic acid is important only for women, though. There have been indications that folic acid can reduce risks of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
