Folic Acid Reduce Risks of Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke
When Hsien asked me about my healthy habits some time ago, I mentioned that I was thinking of adding folic acid supplements into my diet. For most people, folic acid is associated with dietary suplemmentation before or during early pregnancy. However, this was not the reason I was considering taking folic acids. Folic acid actually performs versatile functions, and unfortunately, we can’t get enough of it from food, and thus often need supplementation.
There is increasing evidence that folic acid may reduce the risk for heart disease and strokes. It is based on the premise that folic acid lowers the levels of homocystein, an amino acid associated with the development of cardiovascular disease. Previous studies have shown contrasting results on this, however, a recent review of currently available data from cohort studies concludes that homocysteine is indeed a cause of cardiovascular disease and since folic acid consumption exert a negative effect on blood homocysteine concentrations, folic acid may therefore reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

[…] Just a few days ago, I wrote that folic acid supplementation does the heart good and lowers the risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Now, a new finding study says the opposite: “The findings of this analysis suggest that folic acid supplementation is ineffective in the secondary prevention of CVD among persons with a history of vascular diseases. Therefore, it is important to focus on strategies of proven benefit in the secondary prevention of CVD, including smoking cessation, lipid reduction, treatment of hypertension and diabetes, maintenance of a healthy weight, and physical activity,” the authors conclude. Very interesting article I have been using folic acid for some time now, I have found that it offers a number of health benefits like those metioned in your article, but I also incorporate a number of other supplements in my diet to increase heart health benefits like Vitamin E, Salmon Oil, Green Tea extract, Oat Bran Fiber, and a product called Heart Extract all of which I believe have greatly benefitted me and improved my cardiovascular health, good article because not many people know about the heart health benefits of folic acid.
