Olive Oil May Prevent H.pylori Infections and Peptic Ulcers

by ruth on February 20th, 2007

Bertolli Lucca Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 34 fl ozA lot of health benefits have been attributed to olive oil. Here’s a new one: preliminary studies indicate olive oil might help prevent and treat Helicobacter pylori infections which cause gastritis and peptic ulcers.

Brenes and colleagues used laboratory experiments to demonstrate that under simulated conditions the healthful phenolic compounds in extra virgin olive oil remain stable in the acidic environment of the stomach for hours. In laboratory cultures, those substances had a strong antibacterial effect against eight strains of H. pylori, including antibiotic-resistant strains.

It seems that extra virgin olive oil may have potentials as a chemoprotective agent for peptic ulcer or gastric cancer, but naturally, this bioactivity still needs to be confirmed in vivo.

This is actually great to hear! I recently did a homeopathic body cleanse consisting of olive oil and lemon juice. Ultimately, I passed three small gallstones. I admit to worrying slightly about ingesting so much oil, but when I later met with my physician and shared what I had accomplished, she seemed pleased and somewhat enlightened. It’s been nearly a month since, but I feel great — and my excretory tract seems to have found a regular routine, too.

This is exciting news! Another food being studied in relation to H. pylori is broccoli sprouts. A Japanes human clinical study showed a reduction in H. pylori infection after two months of broccoli sprout ingestion. I cook with olive oil all the time, and would love to hear the results of in vivo studies.
