Picking on Pomegranates
Pomegranates are a recent discovery for me. Until a few months ago, I largely ignored this fruit. But now, I’m addicted to them! You’d see me picking on them instead of chips while watching tv, or while reading the paper.
Still, I realize that I am nowhere near the consumption level needed to effect its known medicinal benefits. For that, one would be better off with pomegranate juice concentrates.
But hey, it must amount to something, and at least, it’s draws me away from snacking on junk food.
What’s your favorite fruit?

The quantities might be smaller when eating fresh fruit, but what do you think about the argument that juices have been pasteurized, therefore cooked, and thus many of the good enzymes have been removed? Is this just LA urban raw-foodist myth? I’m not sure if it’s true or not, but I have noticed I have removed juices from my diet, other than my daily orange.

Hi Foodette, thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. As to your question, I think it really depends on what you’re after. Heating and processing, in general, may indeed destroy enzymes, but in case of antioxidants, there have been numerous studies indicating that these compounds survive most processing techniques. In the case of lycopene, for example, it is even more bioavailable in heat-treated tomatoes (a fact that tomato sauce manufacturers are milking).

I am a total pomegranate junkie. I go through probably 3 a week when they’re in season, and more if they’re on sale! Love them, but hate the Pom juice. It’s too tart for my taste.

i’m addicted to pomegranites too! I’, on my 3rd one this week and at $3-$4each it gets a bit pricey, not to mention disappointing if you get a dud!. i dont bother with the juice its the action of picking and spitting(gross i know)and each little explosion of flavour that i enjoy also while watching telly or long car rides.
