Reader’s Digest presents 31 simple ways to prevent cancer. Now I don’t know how much of these are actually backed by scientific evidence, but, take a guess how many are food and nutrition-related?
1. Serve sauerkraut at your next picnic.
2. Eat your fill of broccoli, but steam it rather than microwaving it.
3. Toast some Brazil nuts […]

I just wanted to share this video I found Jerry Brunetti’s lecture on food as medicine. Jerry was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1999 and was given 6 months to live. Instead of undergoing chemotherapy, he opted to make dietary changes to enhance his immune system.
Personally, I think that was a brave move, to say […]

Yesterday, I wrote about garlic’s potential as an antimicrobial in cystic fibrosis patients. The benefits of garlicky meals continue:
Numerous studies have indicated that the consumption of garlic and onions seems to reduce the risk of contracting cancer, particularly colon and stomach cancer.
People who used the most onion or garlic about a half-cup of chopped onion […]

A study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry reports that naringenin, a flavonoid compound found in grapefruit and oranges may help prevent cancer, and not just because of its antioxidant properties. However, nobody knows whether they are really effective, and what dosage is necessary.
Researchers from the […]

I did a bit of bloghopping today, following the discussion and exchanges resulting from article written Robert Bazell on NBC News, “Ignoring the failures of alternative medicine“. From the Lab Cat, I arrived at the Science Blogs’ Terra Sigillata, which then pointed me to Aetiology.
All these in response to the recent report that “anti-aging” […]

The powers of garlic to treat various maladies have long been known. Numerous studies have been conducted over the years to identify bioactive substances in garlic, and have uncovered clues to its mode of action, alhtough not enough to earn it the label of being a true alternative medicine. A large number of research have […]

Over the last few years, we’ve seen a lot of sleeping pills enter the market for people who chronically have difficulty in sleeping. The newer pills are believed to be more powerful, although whether it’s because of scientific evidence or marketing strategies, is difficult to say. A new report from Consumers Union, which appears in […]
