The DASH Diet Against Hypertension

by ruth on May 5th, 2007

What’s the DASH Diet? No, it doesn’t refer to the habit of grabbing something to eat on the run. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. And this month being the National High Blood Pressure Education Month, I’d like to emphasize that simple dietary changes can go a long way in reducing your risks of developing high blood pressure or even lower your already elevated blood pressure.

The DASH diet is an eating plan that is low in fat but rich in low-fat dairy foods, fruits, and vegetables. WebMD has an excellent collection of info on how the DASH diet works and how you can incorporate it into your lifestyle. The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute also has a page on healthy eating and the DASH Diet, with heart healthy recipes and general tips on how to make your meals healthier.

And just to as a reminder… when was the last time you checked your blood pressure?
